Fast, affordable and reliable AC service for Chippewa County
Hurlburt Heating AC and Plumbing provides residential air conditioning repair for any brand, anytime. We have technicians on call 24/7 to help you in the event of an AC emergency. While a broken air conditioner might not be as big of an emergency as a busted water line, it can get unbearably hot in our area of Wisconsin at times. Children, older people, immunocompromised individuals and even pets can all struggle to regulate their body temperatures during extreme weather. If you are suffering at home without AC, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
What should you do if your AC isn’t cooling?
If your air conditioner isn’t keeping up, or is not running at all, we always recommend contacting a trained professional to take a look. Even if you manage to fix the problem, there are things you can’t check on your own that may still need to be addressed.
That being said…here are some things to check before giving us a call. You might just be able to get your AC system up and running again so you can stay cool while you wait for a professional to check it over.
- Thermostat batteries. You might have a thermostat that requires batteries. Most thermostats that take batteries will have a warning light when the batteries are low, however not all models do. It’s a good idea to change your thermostat batteries once per year regardless.
- Breaker switch. If your AC is not running at all, the breaker might have tripped at the electrical panel. If that was the case, you should still have us out to see why the air conditioner tripped the breaker so we can address the root of the problem.
- Furnace switch. If you’ve been organizing or cleaning your utility room and then all of a sudden, your AC isn’t turning on, you might have bumped the furnace switch. This will stop the thermostat from talking to your air conditioner and it won’t turn on.
- Furnace filter. A dirty filter can cause enough air restriction to stop your AC from functioning effectively. Essentially, the AC can’t breathe and will overheat.
- Outdoor condenser. The coils on the outdoor unit can get clogged up with dirt, grass clippings and cottonwood seeds. This restricts airflow just like a dirty furnace filter does but is easy to fix if you have a garden hose with a sprayer. All you need to do is rinse the debris out of the condenser until the coils are clear.
- Drain fitting. There is a small drain fitting on the coil that sits above your furnace that sometimes gets clogged with debris if you don’t have your air conditioner regularly serviced. If you see any water on the floor near your furnace, take a look at this fitting.
How much does AC repair cost in Chippewa Falls?
We get this question a lot and it’s a tough one to answer. It really depends on what is wrong with your air conditioner. A simple part like a capacitor or a contactor might only be a couple hundred bucks all said and done but something like a motor or a compressor is going to be more expensive.
Hurlburt Heating AC and Plumbing will always be transparent with you and discuss repair costs upfront before we begin our services.
In some cases, we might recommend replacement rather than repair. When an air conditioner reaches the end of its lifespan, it might not be worth doing extensive repairs on. This is something we can discuss with you when we have a chance to look at your AC unit.
How long should an air conditioner last in Wisconsin?
We typically see AC units last around 15 years but you might get 20 years out of your system if you make a point to take care of it. Preventative maintenance is one of the best things you can do to extend the life of your air conditioner and it doesn’t take much effort at all.
Preventative maintenance we recommend:
- Change your furnace filter on a regular schedule
- Clean dirt and debris from the coil on your condenser with a garden hose
- Trim tall plants and grasses around your AC condenser
- Get an annual tune up from a licensed HVAC professional
How can Hurlburt Heating AC and Plumbing find and fix a leaking AC?
Coolant leaks can be tricky sometimes but there are a few proven methods to find and repair them. Sometimes we can find a leak in a few minutes but other times it can take hours. Each situation is different.
If it is a very small leak, we might use a leak stop or leak sealant in the coolant when we recharge your AC system.
For larger leaks, we will have to find them and repair them. We can often find leaks using Nitrogen or fluorescent leak-detecting dye. Where the leak is found dictates how we will proceed. On older AC systems, we often find leaks in the indoor coil as the coil ages and begins to deteriorate. In the majority of these cases, we need to replace the coil.
At Hurlburt, we make sure to keep you informed and always discuss your options before we proceed with leak repairs.
